"I will end ‘dumsor’" – Minister of Power designate

The Minister designate for the Power Ministry, Dr. Kwabena Donkor has promised to end Ghana’s power crisis by assembling the best brains in the energy sector to work out modalities to solve the problem.

“I will bring on board energy policy experts from across the divide, I will bring on board people who have been there before for us to look at a holistic solution that will drive the future development of this country,” he said.

He was certain that this move, coupled with coordinated investments will assist the nation’s development through the supply of reliable power. Dr. Donkor made these remarks during his vetting on Monday by the Vetting Committee of Parliament.

President John Mahama appointed him Minister designate for the newly created Power Ministry a few weeks ago following a worsening energy crisis which gave rise to series of demonstrations by some angry residents in Kumasi and Accra.

Dr. Donkor observed that Ghana’s inability to end the recurrent energy crisis can be attributed to the lack of coordinated investment in the sector.  According to him, successive governments have paid little attention to the sector which plays an important role in the country’s socio-economic development.

The Pru East Member of Parliament (MP) said when given the nod by Parliament, he will invest in new equipment, human resource to help him realize his vision for the new Ministry of Power.  He mentioned that the power crisis persists because “too often, we have taken short-term solutions, quick fixes because there is pressure on you and so it is fixed for only a season to return in another season.

We will be looking at more sustainable long-term solutions.”
