President John Dramani Mahama has urged Africans to use social media to tell the story of the continent to the rest of the world.
“The world is literally at our finger tips. In 140 typographic characters, we can share even the most mundane news of our lives with complete strangers in faraway places. With a single hashtag we can appeal to the humanity of our brothers and sisters across the globe and ask for help with a deadly epidemic or with the return on kidnapped school girls,” said President Mahama.
Some Africans are of the view that the foreign media portray Africa negatively.
President Mahama said Africans must continue to take to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to tell the continent’s rich culture and successes.
“We must continue to post, share, ping and blog about all over victories, whether large or small, personal or political. When we celebrate yet another free and fair election we celebrate our future. Each story affirms that the true wealth of our rich continent lies not in the gold, silver, diamonds, bauxites, copper or even oil, but rather in our people.”
“They give us an opportunity to share the accomplishments and experiences and yes the frustrations. They allow us to understand that we are part of a movement,” he added.
President John Dramani Mahama was speaking at the Oxford University on Friday on the topic: “A Continent on the Move: People, Politics and Business across Borders.”
