Former NPP Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey is dead

The former minister of state died in London Sunday morning after battling sickness.

The advertising guru who was a founding member of the New Patriotic Party was born on February 4, 1946. As a politician, he was very instrumental as a campaign Manager of then candidate Kufuor and oversaw the 2000 general elections that brought the NPP to power.

From 2005 to July 2007, Obetsebi-Lamptey served as Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations in the cabinet of President John Kufuor. Previously Obetsebi-Lamptey was Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital (2002–05) and Minister of Information (2001–02).

He resigned as a minister in 2007 to campaign for the NPP presidential primary with 16 others for the 2008 general elections but lost.

He however won the party’s National Chairmanship in 2010 but attempts by Mr Lamptey to return the NPP to power in 2012 failed and was voted out as the party's National Chairman in a Congress held in Tamale in 2014.

Obetsebi-Lamptey has several publications to his credit, covering topics from family planning to AIDS prevention in Africa.

He was 70 years.
