Follow Live: Dignified funeral for Major Maxwell Mahama


Summary

(a). A state burial is being held at the State House in Accra to lay the soldier to eternal rest

(b). The senior military officer was slayed Monday, May 29, 2017, while on national assignment at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region

(c). At least 43 suspects are currently standing trial in connection with the murder.

(d). Hundreds of mourners including military personnel have lined the streets from the Flagstaff House to Parliament House to pay their last respect to the fallen hero.

(e). Major Mahama left behind his wife Barbara Mahama and two sons, Jaden and Jerry.



11:45am The first part of the funeral service for the lynched Major, Maxwell Adam Mahama has ended with a prayer from archbishop Palmer-Buckle calling for national healing in a prayer greeted with potent 'amens' and yet many more tears.

11:20am: Governement of Ghana represented by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia lays a wreath. The Army follows with its wreath for the 31-year old soldier. Former President Mahama lays a wreath for the family. Some suprised mourners clap; 'daddy oo daddy'.

Finally, Barbara, the wife, takes a walk of pain much different from the walk down the aisle, to lay her wreath. She spends a moment of grief at the decorated coffin of her husband.



10:59: Offertory lifts the huge gathering off its feet to give an offerring invites a moment of organised chaos at the funeral as mourners move around to find a place to put in an offerring.

10:50: Bishop Dag prays for the nation, binds the 'spirit of bloodshed' and asks for wisdom for Ghana's leaders urging God to keep people out of the new dangers in recent times.

10:50am: Founder of the Lighthouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills gave a sermon to remind the gathering that 'all dead people are alive'. He says a man's soul must choose heaven and hell and urges the attentive mourners to consider thier new address in 50 years' time.

9:35am: His father, a retired amry officer cannot read his tribute any longer - less than a minute after he starts. He breaks down and another family member takes over.

9:35am: Mother of Major Mahama has read a tribute that has drawn fresh and free tears from a crowd as well as fresh anger for justice for the lynched army officer.

9:10am : An army of ministers have camped under three tents at the Army Major' funeral while military officers swarm the premises. Of course the state house has become a mini-media hub with presenters, photojournalists jostling for space in the center of merciless sunshine.
