Nigerian student arrest: confessed killing brother at Accra New Town

Mustapha Musa Osmanu, a 23 year old Nigerian student has confessed to the police that he stabbed his two brothers at Accra New Town last Friday, leading to the death of one of them.

Musa Osmanu, currently in police custody, said he committed the act after taking 20 doses of Diazepam 5gm tablets he took the previous night to enable him study.

He is provisionally being charged for murder and causing harm.

At about 3:30 am that Friday, Musa Osmanu, said he sneaked into their kitchen, picked a knife and first stabbed Jamiru Osman, 23, in the chest before stabbing Nazifi Osman Mohammed, 27, in the chest and the stomach, leading to his death.

Nazifi, the oldest among the three—a matrilineal relative to the suspect—was pronounced dead on arrival at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital same day when the three were rushed to the health facility for treatment.

However, Jamiri Osman who was then unconscious is said to have regained consciousness and is currently in a stable condition.

Briefing the media about the arrest, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Accra Regional Police Commander, said after Musa Osmanu had reported to the police Friday morning that they were attacked by armed robbers, police immediately launched investigations into the alleged robbery.

On Saturday, November 29,2014, police managed to speak with Jamiru Osman on his hospital bed and he revealed that it was Musa Osmanu who attacked them while they were sleeping that fateful day.

Jamiru, according to the Accra Regional Police Commander, recounted that Musa Osmanu, after the act, intentionally asked him (Osmanu) if he knew the one who stabbed them.

Jamiru narrated that after seeing the intestines of Nazifi gushed out and blood flowing from his stomach, he immediately had to pretend he did not see the one who stabbed them after he was asked by suspect whether he saw something.

"The victim said if he had said yes, Musa Osmanu would have killed him instantly which was why he said he did not know the one who stabbed them," DCOP Yohuno narrated.

The suspect then used the knife to inflict wounds on Jamiru's hands before calling on neighbours for help.

DCOP Yohuno said when some neighbours rushed to their aid, Musa Osmanu told them that three masked armed men attacked them and stabbed his two brothers.

The police suspected that Musa Osmanu committed the act when he learned that the victims had been remitted about $4,000 from their elder brother to pay their school fees.

The money, which was changed into cedis, was in the custody of Musa Osmanu but police only retrieved about GHȻ8,000 from him.

Meanwhile, while in police custody Musa Osmanu told the media, "I admit committing the act. I regret my action and I even wanted to commit suicide after the act but Jamiru took the knife from me..."

Musa Osmanu continued, "I was out of control after taking the drug; I did not commit the offence because of the money and I regret having taken the drugs which enables me study for more than five hours a day..."
