10 arrested in connection with alleged leaking of BECE papers

Ten persons, including three junior high school students have been arrested by the police in connection with the leak of five papers of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Seven of them were arrested in Kumasi while the three students were picked up in Accra.

According to a security source, the students were found with some of the leaked papers.

The names of the suspects are being withheld by the police for security reasons.

The source said the students had been allowed to continue to write their BECE while they and their parents were being monitored.

The source also said the seven persons who were arrested in Kumasi were linked to a syndicate that masterminded the leak of the papers on that massive scale.

It said those persons contacted some of the students and parents to use mobile money transfer to pay for the papers if they were interested.

Last Wednesday, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) cancelled five subject papers in the ongoing BECE.

They are Papers 2 of English Language, Religious and Moral Education, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Social Studies.

That followed the discovery by the WAEC that those papers had leaked and, thus compromised the integrity of the papers.
