2. Wesley Girls’ High School (Wey Gey Hey) – Cape Coast


The school was founded by the wife of the 2nd Methodist Missionary to the Gold Coast, Mrs. Harriet Wrigley in 1836 with 25 girls.

Her aim was to give the girls basic training in housekeeping and catechism.



Subjects taught included writing, reading, sewing and religious education.



Classes were held at the Manse, in the Standfast Hall near the Victoria Park in Cape Coast. Now it is one of the best schools in the Country.

Wesley Girls' High School was ranked 68th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa by Africa Almanac in 2003, based upon quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumnae, school profile, internet and news visibility


Notable Alumni include Sylvia Boye, Former Chief Executive and first female Registrar of West Africa Examinations Council and Florence Dolphyne, First Female Pro-vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, Legon.
