Ghana wins maritime dispute; Cote d'Ivoire denied rights to the oil

The International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) accepted Ghana’s arguments in the maritime dispute with Ivory Coast and ruled in favour of Ghana. Ghana argued that the equidistance rule be used in delimiting the maritime boundary between the two countries. The Chamber rejected Ivory Coast’s claim that a meridian measurement be used.

Achimota school student convicted for murder

After almost a year of court activities, a juvenile Court in Accra has sentenced the 18-year old final year student of Achimota School who shot his girlfriend with his father’s single barrel gun to three years at the correctional home. The deceased Lily Dzigbordi Asigbetse who lived at Cantonments had visited the accused person at Community eight (8) in Tema. The incident occurred on January 5 2017. The accused told the police that he intended to shoot into the air however the gravity of the gun changed course and hit the deceased. The latest judgement by the court has been met with praise by the family of the deceased. A family member, Peggy Ama Donkor wrote on her Facebook Timeline:  “Our God indeed answers by fire and vindicates his own. Archbishop Duncan-Williams reveals how he lost his finger

In an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, Archbishop Nicolas Duncan Williams said he didn't have a smooth childhood including visit to many traditional shrines.  He indicated that he used to hear a lot of voices which he believed were a contention of the forces of ‘light and darkness’. He said that on that fateful night on which he lost his fingers, he heard some voices in his head.  He continued to say that the voices instructed him to light a candle and hold his fingers in the flame. The Man of God said that he obliged to the voice of the spirit thinking it was one of the sacrifices required to see him become successful.  When his fingers turned into ashes and the pain became unbearable, he screamed out alerting his siblings who rushed to the scene and took him to the hospital for medical assistance.   He was on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for months after the ‘ordeal’. 10,000 NSS personnel to undergo military training next year - Defence Minister

Minister of Defence Mr Dominic Nitiwul has revealed that 10,000 national service personnel would be selected to embark on six months of military training as part of their national service next year. According to him, officials of the National Service Scheme (NSS) have already written to the military to inform them about the exercise. Mr Nitiwul made the revelation when he spoke to the media after appearing before the Public Account Committee (PAC) over the 2015 Auditor General’s Report. The PAC is currently holding public sittings on the Report of the Auditor General for the Public Accounts of Ghana for the year ended 31st December, 2015. Mr Nitiwul also stated that the law to allow service personnel to do military training already existed. "Nursing Trainee Quota Is About Quality Not Allowances" - Minister

Aboagye Gyedu, a Deputy Health Minister, has said the quota allocated to public and private nursing training schools is an attempt to increase the quality of training and it has nothing to do with the payment of trainee allowances. Do Not Deposit At MenzGold - Bank Of Ghana Warns General Public

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has sent a cautionary statement to the general public of Ghana not to deposit any money with Menzgold Company Limited, an investment company, because it has not been licensed. According to By ClassfmOnline.com,  Dr Johnson Asiamah ( A Deputy Governor of the Bank  ) appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament on Tuesday August 8, 2017 noted that Ghanaians who defy this caution do that at their own risk. This warning comes on the heels of the yet to be settled infamous DKM and Jesta motors financial scandal where scores of traders were defrauded in some parts of the country. Mahama Ayariga threatens court action over ‘illegal’ university fees

Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has immediate plans of going to court if public universities do not use the proper channels and seek Parliamentary approval for fees they charge. This came as a result of university authorities instructing students to pay what The MP described as “illegal” fees. The University Students Association of Ghana early on made a statement informing all students of public tertiary institutions not to pay their recently increased fees for the 2017/2018 academic year until Parliament approves the increase. NPP's Peter Mac Manu deported from Kenya ahead of elections

Peter Mac Manu a lead member of Democratic Union of Africa (DUA) International Observers to Kenya’s General Elections to be held next week Tuesday, has been deported three days to the elections. Mr. Mac Manu arrived in Ghana on Saturday morning after he was refused entry into the country by security officers.

"We’re saddened by our supervisors' imprisonment" - Marwako

The restaurant chain Marwako says it is saddened by the sentencing of one of its supervisors, Jihad Chabaan to nine months imprisonment for assaulting an employee, Evelyn Boakye. The company, in a statement signed by Director of Public Relations, Alhaji Mohammed Amin Lamptey said though it was hoping the altercation between the two employees would have been settled out of court, it “respects the judgement and will continue to support both Mr. Chabaan, if he decides to appeal, as well as Madam Evelyn in her process.” As parts of efforts to strengthen amongst staff, the company has began what it calls interdepartmental communication and employer-employee relationship as well as seminars on internal relations. "Apologize to Ghanaian Christians by Monday" - Owusu Bempah to Otabil

Reverend Owusu Bempah says he has an issue with Ps Otabil over a viral sermon video where Otabil made some comments implying Christians tend to stop thinking when their faith increases. Rev Bempah accused Pastor Otabil of insulting Christians who pay large sums of money in church. "I respect Mensa Otabil a lot but I won’t have him call all prophets fake, there may be some fake prophets but the same way there are fake bible teachers too, he can’t put us all into one bracket,” he fumed. “Unless Mensa Otabil tells me that he takes money collected in his church to heaven, we all use the monies collected in the church for God’s work, I am asking him to apologize to Ghanaian Christians and prophets by Monday, if not he will have me to contend with,” he warned.

"Don't apply logic to matters of faith" - Pastor Mensa Otabil cautions

Dr. Mensa Otabil of ICGC in his sermon told believers at the Greater Works conference not to apply logic to matters of faith. The pastor told the congregation that belief can make all things possible. “Beliefs goes beyond logic. Logic will tell you what is probable or things being equal. Logic will tell you that if you have a thousand cedis in your account, then you can spend thousand cedis because that is logical. Beliefs will tell you that if you have five loafs of bread you don’t feed five people. “Belief will tell you that if you have five loafs of bread you can feed five thousand; that is not logical. Shatta Michy, business woman and wife of dance hall king Shatta Wale says she's not bothered by the AMA's planned demolishing of her The Diamond Pub and Grill at East Legon in Accra. In a Facebook post, Shatta Michy describes the assembly’s decision to pull down her pub within a week as a major contributor to joblessness in Ghana. “It’s only in Ghana that a young lady would try to do something for herself, encourage other young ladies to do same no matter how small and she ends up being fought from all angles. Stronger forever,” she wrote on Facebook. Michy added that all these trials and challenges will not stop her from achieving her goals in life and she intends to inspire other young ladies with her works.

National Service Scheme apologizes to personnel for ‘military brutality’

The National Service Scheme has apologized to the graduates were beaten a military personnel at the LaDMA Annex on Monday It is said the incident was “regrettable”. The registration process for this year’s national service personnel turned chaotic when some military personnel moved in to maintain order. The presence of the military was necessitated by a long disorganized queue of prospective personnel. The officers reportedly used belts and batons on the personnel leaving at least two persons injured. One of the injured persons, a lady, is said to have been stuck on the head while a young man suffered injuries on knees from a strike by one of the uniformed personnel.

Ghana Revenue Authority shuts down GLO over unpaid taxes

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has closed down telecommunications network Globacom Ghana (GLO) over unpaid taxes. Glo offices at the Industrial area and Spintex Road were force to close down this morning by a GRA task force. According to GRA, GLO has failed to pay 11, 884,396.89 million Ghana cedis in taxes.

An intelligent young man, Akannae Ayine Ebenezer who is a science student of the Navrongo SHS in the Upper East managed to secure eight As in the recently-concluded WASSCE. Sadly, there's a possibility of him missing out on university education due to lack of funds. Ebenezer had A in all the subjects he sat for, including Physics, Core Maths, Elective Maths and Chemistry. Uber set to extend services to Kumasi by September 2017

Kumasi is the next city in Ghana to benefit from Uber services by close of the third quarter, this year, this is according to General Manger of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, Alon Lits. The Ridge Hospital will soon become the Greater Accra regional hospital, President John Mahama has said. This follows the progress of work done on the Ridge Hospital expansion project. The Ridge Hospital project involves the design, construction, procurement and installation of equipment for the rehabilitation of the hospital. The project is expected to be completed in 2016, and is being financed with a Government of Ghana mixed credit facility of US$250 million from Exim Bank and the HSBC Bank. Speaking at the launch of the book, “Accounting To The People” at the Banquet Hall- State House in Accra, President Mahama said "We assume that Korlebu is Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
