‘I paid each delegate ¢1k but still lost because others paid more" – Defeated NPP A/R chairman aspirant

  One of the defeated contestants for the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairmanship position has disclosed that he paid ¢1,000 to each delegate on the election day in his quest to win. Robert Asare Bediako said despite paying the delegates, they still did not vote for him. The defeated aspirant insists he would have won the election if not for the monetisation of the exercise. However, he said his close contenders paid higher monies to win. “Whiles I was paying each delegate ¢1,000, I thought I would win but some paid more than me so the delegates also gave in to the highest bidder and it’s very worrying the trend of monetization in our body politics,” Mr Asare Bediako, made this known in an interview on Akoma FM on Monday, May 30. Ghana releases over 400 acres of state lands to Asantehene

Government has released   a portion of state lands at the Ridge Residential Area in Kumasi to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. According to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, the release has been made to the Asantehene on behalf of and in trust for subjects of the Golden Stool. A letter dated May 18, sighted by Myjoyonline.com indicated that the gesture is pursuant to the issuance of “Executive Instrument 432 of 2021 by Government in respect of Redevelopment of Sector 18 of Kumasi, which was published in the Ghana Gazette on 31st December, 2021.” The letter, addressed to “All Public Institutions – Ashanti Region”, was signed by the Chief Director of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, Mrs. Emelia Ayebeng Botchway, on behalf of the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah. The General Legal Council, GLC, has decided to admit the 499 law students who were denied entry into the Ghana School of Law, according to their lawyer. This was revealed after a crunch meeting between leaders of the aggrieved 499 law students, the Attorney General, and representatives from the General Legal Council on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. The 499 law students were failed in the law entrance exams after a new quota system was initiated by the General Legal Council. After protests from the students including a lawsuit, the Attorney General recommended that the GLC admits the students. Speaking to the media, lawyer for the aggrieved students, Martin Kpebu, said the students are however yet to be informed when their admission will take effect. The Ministry of Roads and Highways has directed the immediate discontinuation of the collection of tolls on all public roads and bridges across the country. This order according to a statement signed by the sector Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah is to take effect from Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 12:00am. It follows the announcement by the Finance Ministry of the scrapping of tolls on all public roads. “The Ministry of Roads and Highways hereby directs the cessation of the collection of road and bridge tolls at all locations nationwide.” Police personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are to be stationed at various toll booths to provide security. The government, as part of strategies to widen the country’s tax net, has announced an Electronic Transaction Levy. It will be a 1.75 percent charge on all electronic transactions. This fee, according to the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, is to enhance financial inclusion and protect the vulnerable. Transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances will have the levy imposed on them and will be borne by the sender. “After considerable deliberations, the government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector. This shall be known as the “Electronic Transaction Levy or E-Levy”, Ken Ofori-Atta said on Wednesday, during the presentation of the 2020 Budget in parliament. The government has announced the abolishment of tolls on all public roads in the country. This was announced in the 2022 budget statement and economic policy presented by Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister before Parliament on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. According to the minister, the government has observed that toll booths are doing more harm than good, hence the need to remove them. He said, toll booths cause heavy traffic and impact negatively on productivity. The Human Rights Division of the High Court, presided over Justice Gifty Agyei Addo, ruled that the fundamental human rights of the two students could not be limited by the rules in question. Tyron Iras Marhguy and Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea sued the school’s board of Governors, the Minister of Education, Ghana Education Service and the Attorney General to enforce their fundamental Human Rights.
