Alleged missing cocaine may have been swept away - GRA representative

Image
The Sector Commander of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, Majeed Amandi is of the view that the 100.1 grams of suspected cocaine that mysteriously went missing may have been stolen by officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) or swept away. The Director-General of NACOC, Francis Torkornoo had earlier indicated Customs officers had refused to allow the transportation of the substance which was concealed in a vehicle impounded by NACOC, to Accra. "When they dropped the fuel tank, there was this false compartment under the vehicle containing various parcels and an amount of $200,000. After the inventory, as expected, NACOC wanted to the bring the vehicle to Accra for investigations to start, but the Customs officers refused, saying that they need to hear from their superiors from Accra," he said. Mr Amandi, however, dismissed this explanation in a statement, intimating that, it was intended to discount the Custom officers' handling of the interc...

Government breaking MTN’s monopoly is a good thing -Telecoms expert

Image
Telecoms analyst, Patrick Boateng says government's decision to create a level playing ground for telecom operators, advertently breaking MTN's dominance is a step in the right direction. According to him, such a move will provide industry players with a fair chance in prospering. His statement follows the regulator, National Communication Authority's saying that it will be putting in place certain measures with the telecoms industry to provide a level-playing field for all network operators and break the dominance of MTN Ghana in the sector. According to the Authority, the growing control of MTN "has impacted negatively on competition and consumer choice, necessitating corrective action" though it acknowledges the investments MTN has made in their operations over the years. A statement issued by the Ministry explained that, "the policy directive is motivated by evidence of a growing market imbalance and creation of a near-monopoly in the telecom sector....

Full text: President Nana Akufo-Addo’s 11th address to the nation on measures to fight Covid-19

Image
Fellow Ghanaians, good evening. Exactly two weeks ago, I came again into your homes to outline a roadmap for easing the restrictions put in place to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in our country. I indicated that it would be a phased approach, involving a selected list of public gatherings, based on their risk profile, socio-economic impact, and, most importantly, our capacity to enforce and to respond, in the event of a flair up in our number of infections. Since then, we have had some of our religious institutions opening their doors to worshippers, whilst respecting the limits on numbers, and maintaining the strict protocols announced; others have decided to remain closed until further notice. Private burials are taking place, market places, public transport, including domestic air transport, restaurants, hotels, individual and non-contact sports, and our constitutional and statutory bodies are conducting their activities in accordance with social distancing and...

If it is passed, I’ll repeal the Universities Bill when I become President - Mahama

Image
Withdraw Public Universities Bill- JM What our universities need is partnership. A partnership that fosters academic freedom, enhances their efficiency and also invests in research and development. The KNUST-INCAS COVID-19 rapid test kit innovation is one such outcome that is begging for support. Our academics and students need support to focus on their core mandates of creating and sharing knowledge, not a Public Universities Bill that seeks to control and undermine the independence of our intellectuals and other researchers in state-owned universities. The Bill as it stands does not only risk undermining academic innovation and ingenuity; it will also jettison decades of scholarly excellence and adversely affect Ghana's position as the preferred destination for international scholarly collaboration. As has been stated already by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, University Teachers, some former Vice-Chancellors, individual academics in the universities among many other stak...
